March Home Care Tips and Ideas

As winter begins its thaw & spring precipitation picks up, keep an eye out for moisture intrusion around your home.

The month of March—when temps are beginning to rise but before those April showers—is the ideal time to get down and dirty with those maintenance projects, says J.B. Sassano, president of Mr. Handyman, a commercial and residential repair, maintenance, and improvement franchise. March “home maintenance projects can extend the longevity and improve the quality of your home, inside and out,” he says (from Realtor.com).

So where do you start?

These tips will help you “dust off” Winter, and prep your home for the warmer and sunnier months ahead:

✔ Lubricate garage door springs, tracks & wheels.

✔ Check & clean faucet/shower head aerators. Replace if necessary.

✔ Drain water from hot water heater to remove sediment.

✔ Clean the AC condenser, remove any debris that can accumulate during the Fall and Winter storms

✔Clean the gutters: remove leaves, pine needles and debris accumulated since the fall. You will need to gutters to drain well during the rainy Spring months.

✔ Service garbage disposal by grinding a few ice cubes.

✔ Check basement/crawlspace for dampness after the next rainstorm or after thaw.

✔ Inspect the roof and windows for any damage Winter storms may have caused. Caulk windows if needed

✔ Test smoke/carbon monoxide detectors.
